Jesus taught His followers to believe and be baptised - so that's the order we like
to follow. We believe that it is the right, the duty and the privilege for every
person to make their own statement of belief about God and Jesus: Your parents can't
promise that you will make that decision when you are old enough; the church can't
promise that you will enter heaven because we've sprinkled you with water; and you
can't rely on an action you were not consenting to when you were a child to somehow
curry favour with God. Our mode of baptism reflects this belief and is called
"believers' baptism" and is usually done by immersion (the picture above
is of a recent baptism at the church). We ask you to show your belief in God as
Father and Jesus as God's only Son in a public demonstration of your faith in this
way. For classes, a booklet or an opportunity to discuss this step of faith please
contact the pastors.
So what about
children?
We do not baptise or 'christen' children. We do believe that the arrival of a
child into the world is a great thing to celebrate and we offer you the chance
to give thanks, to make promises before God as to how you will bring up your
child, to present your child to God, to ask God's blessing and to pray for your
child. If you would like to do this then please contact the pastors to discuss it.
